Planning Your Concrete Project

Embarking on a concrete project is an exciting venture, and at Concrete Experts, we want to ensure your experience is seamless and successful. When planning your project, consider a few key factors to guarantee long-lasting results.

Firstly, to prevent cracks, invest in a proper sub-base and reinforcement. Adequate preparation, such as proper excavation and compacting, sets the foundation for a resilient structure. Additionally, reinforcing with steel mesh or rebar enhances the concrete’s ability to withstand tension and minimize cracking. Learn more about how to treat and prevent concrete cracking here.

Because our region is susceptible to frost heaving, adequate subgrade preparation and drainage away from the concrete are crucial. For every project, we excavate far enough down to confirm that the soil is compacted enough to bear the weight of the concrete, without any pockets for water to pool. Additionally, if desired, installing a layer of foam insulation beneath the concrete helps mitigate the effects of freezing and thawing, ensuring stability over time.

Depending on when you decide to move forward with your project, it may be required that we make special adaptations for the weather. From October 1st onward, our concrete will include a special accelerator in the mix to expedite curing in the lower temperatures. We may also utilize insulating blankets, tarps, and space heaters to make sure the conditions are right for the concrete no matter what the temperature is outside.

Lastly, don’t overlook the aesthetic possibilities. Concrete offers a canvas for creativity: stamped patterns, exposed aggregate, integral colouring, and type/design of control joints. There are many types of finishes to infuse personality into your project. Whether it’s a patio, driveway, walkway, basement, shop floor, or stairway, Concrete Experts is here to guide you through the planning process and bring your vision to life. Let’s create something enduring and beautiful together!
